LBJ/MLK Crossroads Memorial Rededication

The City of San Marcos Arts Commission will rededicate the Crossroads Memorial on the ten-year anniversary of its unveiling Saturday, Feb. 3, 2024 at 9 a.m. at the intersection of MLK and LBJ Drives (POSTPOED from Jan. 15 due to inclement weather).

The Crossroads Memorial commemorates the pivotal meeting between President Lyndon Johnson and civil rights icon Martin Luther King and celebrates our nation’s continuing journey toward equality and civil rights. It also connects historic neighborhoods and our downtown district.

9 – 9:30 a.m.: Crossroads rededication at the intersection of MLK and LBJ.

9:30 a.m.: Dunbar Heritage Association’s 22nd Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Walk and Celebration. This annual event features a wreath laying ceremony followed by a freedom walk from the Crossroads Memorial to the Hays County Courthouse for a celebration on the Square. Calaboose African American History Museum will host its Second Annual National African American Read-in at the Cephas House, 200 W. MLK Drive, from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Join thousands of readers nationwide in celebration and learning during Black History Month 2024.

Trailblazers exhibit at the Walkers’ Gallery: The Walkers' Gallery invites artists to submit their work to this first exhibit of 2024, in response to the theme: “Trailblazers: Honoring the Road to Civil Rights.”  Art delivery will be Jan. 6, 2024 at the San Marcos Activity Center from 10:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Click here for more details

10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.: Dunbar Heritage Association MLK Kids Event at the San Marcos Public Library. Join the Dunbar Heritage Association for a celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Children from Pre-K through middle school will discover new books, art, videos, and crafts, and create their own poster and other crafts for the upcoming annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day March. 3-5 p.m.: Reunion of Trailblazers at the San Marcos Public Library. This will be a special reunion of civil rights Trailblazers who were honored 10 years ago on the eve of the dedication of the Crossroads Memorial. The original 73 Trailblazers were recognized for their contributions to Civil Rights in San Marcos, and the reunion will bring those remaining Trailblazers together to celebrate their contributions once again, and to look ahead.
