Big Mural Open House
The San Marcos Arts Commission will host a public open house with three finalists selected for the Gateway Mural Project at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8 at the San Marcos Activity Center. The public is invited to attend and give input to the muralists as they develop their designs for the project.
The three finalists, who were selected by the Arts Commission after a nationwide call for artists, are:
- Andrey Kravtsov of New York
- Ernesto Maranje of Sunrise, Fla.
- Don Rimx of Orlando, Fla.
All have experience in mural projects on large-scale buildings and in creating vibrant designs. The artists will create designs for submission to the Arts Commission this spring, and a final nominee for the project will be selected. The mural is scheduled to be complete this fall.
The Gateway Mural will be placed on the back wall of on the back wall of the building at 110 E MLK Drive, facing South LBJ Drive (the building that now houses Industry, THRC Downtown, and other businesses.)
The location of this upcoming mural is in a gateway to Downtown and is adjacent to a growing entertainment area in the City. It will serve the dual purposes of abating frequent graffiti in this highly visible entryway and add to the city’s inventory of public art for residents and visitors to enjoy.
