Texas State University

Texas State University has come a long way since first opening its doors to about 300 students as Southwest Texas State Normal School in 1903.  Today, Texas State is the fourth largest university in the state with more than 38,231 students as of August 2020.

Our students have plenty of options to choose from, and so do our friends and visitors. Cultural opportunities are abundant, from the Wittliff Collections at the university’s Alkek Library, to University Art Gallery exhibitions, concerts, theatre performances, guest artists, lectures and other special events annually.

Texas State is the only campus in the nation to contain the headwaters of a major river, and we invite you to visit The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment (formerly Aquarena Center) to learn about our most vital natural resource – water – and to appreciate the best example of the beauty of San Marcos.

And don’t forget that every day is a great day to be a Bobcat!

The Texas State Athletic Department participates in Division I of the Sun Belt Conference (FBS in football) and there is always an exciting sport in season.  Join us at a game and help celebrate our Bobcat Pride.  Celebrate Bobcat Season in San Marcos every month of the year!
