Parking at San Marcos River Parks

Planning a day by the San Marcos River? Whether you're heading out for a swim, a float, or just some time in the shade, knowing where to park can make your visit a whole lot smoother. From Rio Vista Park to City Park and beyond, this guide breaks down the best parking options near San Marcos’ riverfront parks.

City Park  - Paid Parking

City Park makes it easy to enjoy a day by the San Marcos River, with 268 parking spaces steps away from the Lions Club Tube Rental, the riverfront, and the Pauline Espinosa Community Hall. Beginning in July 2025, visitors from outside San Marcos city limits will need to pay for parking, with rates starting at $5 for an hour and topping out at $15 for the day. (Texas State University events and holidays will be a flat rate of $25 for the whole day. )A 30-minute grace period gives you time to scope things out before committing, and you can pay by card at on-site kiosks or through the PayByPhone app. San Marcos residents can register their vehicles for free parking, and everyone gets a seamless experience thanks to license plate recognition technology. Just be sure your plate is entered correctly, and remember, this lot is for City Park visitors only, not Texas State University parking. You can learn more about the City Park lot here.

CM Allen Parkway

CM Allen Parkway runs alongside several of San Marcos’ most popular riverfront parks, making its street parking spots highly sought-after, especially on weekends. Parking here is free, but spaces are limited and often fill up fast. It’s a convenient option if you’re visiting City Park, Rio Vista, or just enjoying the river trail. Be sure to park only in designated spots and check for any temporary signage during special events or maintenance days.

Juan Veramendi Historical Plaza Park

Tucked along the river near Downtown San Marcos, Veramendi Plaza Park is a peaceful spot perfect for a scenic stroll or enjoying the historic charm of the area. Parking here is very limited but free, with a small lot on-site and additional street parking nearby. If you’re exploring the Downtown area or connecting to the river trails, it’s a convenient and quiet place to start, just be mindful of posted signs and time limits.

Ramon Lucio

Ramon Lucio Park offers a quieter stretch of river access, plus sports fields, and lots of green space to spread out. Parking here is free, and there’s a paved lot on-site with additional overflow parking available during events. But, as always, arriving early is your best bet on weekends and holidays.

Rio Vista Park

Parking here is free but can fill up quickly on weekends and warm-weather days, so plan to arrive early or be prepared to walk a bit. Nearby street parking is also available, but always check signage to avoid time limits or permit-only zones. There are two very small ADA parking lots near the Tennis Courts and Pool.

Pay Lots

In addition to park-specific lots, there are several paid parking options near Downtown and the San Marcos riverfront that can come in handy during busy weekends or events. These public lots are conveniently located within walking distance to the river, shopping, dining, and entertainment. Rates and time limits vary, so be sure to check posted signage or payment kiosks. Many accept credit cards or mobile app payments, making it easy to grab a spot and get on with your day of river fun or downtown exploring.
