San Marcos is known for its crystal-clear river and many forms of aquatic fun, but when the sun goes down, this Hill Country charmer shows off its nightlife. From live music to a vibrant craft brewery and distillery scene, San Marcos after dark is full of vigor and satisfying surprises.
We’ll Do it Live
With live acts nearly every night of the week, San Marcos is a music lover’s paradise. Hear well-known and emerging artists at a variety of local venues where you can sit back and enjoy a well-sung song and a well-strummed guitar.
Catch major acts on tour or attend a theme night at The Marc in Downtown San Marcos, a two-level venue in a historic building with high-energy vibes. For a more laid-back approach, check out the pet-friendly Davenport for local bands, and The Porch, where live music is joined by pool tables and dart boards. San Marcos is also home to a free Summer in the Park series held every Thursday from June to August from 7:30 to 9:30pm. Hear a variety of music genres at family-friendly concerts in San Marcos Plaza Park. And if the sound of a Disney princess is music to your ears, catch The Little Mermaid live in July, part of San Marcos’ free outdoor summer programming.
Glow-in-the-Dark Kayaking? Yes, Please
Floating down the San Marcos River draws scores of visitors to the city, but one of the best ways to experience this must-do is at night. Paddle SMTX and Get Up and Go Kayaking give kayaking a “glow up” with translucent boats blinged with glowing, underwater LED lights in a variety of colors. The effect is truly surreal, bringing to life the river’s subsurface features with startling beauty.
Experience mini golf at night, too, at Putt Pub, an entertainment venue that puts the partying in putting. Along with an 18-hole miniature golf course, this lively venue has two bars, indoor and outdoor seating, and a full menu of eats to keep you busy before and after your game.
Nighttime is When the Spirits Come Out
Experience San Marcos through its hip and lively local breweries and distilleries. Spend the evening at just one location or string several experiences together to create your own “trail.”
For a chill, pet-friendly vibe and a taste of the borderline mythical Thirsty Goat Amber Ale, head for Thirsty Planet Brewery, an easy-going venue complete with a tasting room and indoor and outdoor seating. The small, family-owned Roughhouse Brewing delivers a rustic experience with its foeder-fermented ales, lagers, and cave-aged beers served in a farmhouse. At Middleton Brewing, sample a rotating lineup of IPAs, Belgian ales, and local favorites, best enjoyed with tacos and quesadillas from its resident food truck, Los Sancho.
Bonus: On the way to Roughhouse and Middleton, see a late afternoon glass-blowing demo at Wimberley Glassworks or check out the wares at Silo Glass Studio.
Artsy After Dark
Check out San Marcos’ quirky charm and dynamic arts scene at the monthly Martian Culture Art Market, held every second Sunday at 8pm at Zelick’s Icehouse. This energetic, 21-and-over gathering assembles artists, vendors, a regular DJ, live street performers and demos, original art, photography, and hand-crafted goods
Martian Culture is a celebration of all things San Marcos. This event will feature live painters and artists, live DJ, special performances, original artwork, prints and hand crafted goods. 21+ 8:00pm.

San Marcos Nightlife is the Right Life
San Marcos doesn't clock out at sunset. It loves its job too much. What’s San Marcos’ job, you ask? Oh, only trading river dips for glowing kayaks, bringing people together at late-night art markets, and serving up some of the most far-out craft beer in Texas. In other words: bringing joy to all who enter. San Marcos is kind of like Santa Claus, but without the 11-month vacation.
