The Coffee Bar - Located right on the historic Downtown Square, The Coffee Bar is the quintessential San Marcos coffee experience. Handcrafted espresso drinks, from-scratch pastries, big windows, and a 100-year-old building that practically oozes charm. It's the perfect first stop before the chaos begins.

Fairview Coffee - For the coffee purists in the family, you know, the ones who need their espresso, Fairview Coffee is your spot. Expect a strong focus on craft coffee with a modern, cozy atmosphere. A classically great cup, every time.

Triple Six Social - Y'all, San Marcos has a goth coffee shop, and it's so much fun! Triple Six Social is dark, moody, and always a vibe. Their coffee drinks are served sweet, and rest assured, you'll be buzzing all day with energy for the big move. 

Wake The Dead - Such a fun and funky spot - Wake the Dead is a San Marcos landmark. The Tim Burton-esque coffee shop is a great spot for studying or a quick cup of coffee before hitting the ground running. They also have live music, open mic nights, comedy nights, lots of markets, and so much more. If you're looking for something fun, we guarantee Wake The Dead has something cool going on. 

Lamppost Coffee - Looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of Downtown and the campus area? Lamppost Coffee is just far enough away for some peace and quiet without having to drive very far at all! This cozy little spot is also in the direction of the San Marcos Outlets and many other stores you may need for some dorm or new apartment essentials... 

The Farewell Family Meal: Restaurants for a Send-Off Dinner

After the boxes are unpacked and the furniture is (mostly) assembled, it's time for the most important tradition of move-in weekend: the family dinner. This is the meal before your student is officially on their own, so make it count. San Marcos has no shortage of incredible spots to share one last meal together.

Palmer's Restaurant Bar & Courtyard - Palmer's is a San Marcos classic for a reason. Steaks, seafood, Southern classics, and a beautiful garden courtyard setting make it the ideal spot for a special occasion dinner. The menu is diverse enough to please everyone at the table, and the atmosphere feels like a proper celebration. This is the move-in dinner spot.

Blue Dahlia Bistro - Fresh, European-inspired flavors, a gorgeous secret garden patio, and a menu full of dishes that feel both elevated and approachable. Blue Dahlia Bistro is the kind of place that makes parents say, "Okay, maybe ." Brunch or dinner, it never disappoints.

North Street - If your family is up for something a little more adventurous, North Street's Indian-Mexican fusion dishes are bold, colorful, and absolutely delicious. The vibrant decor makes for great photos, and the food is the kind of thing you'll be talking about for weeks.

Black's BBQ - You can't move to Texas without a proper introduction to Texas BBQ. Black's BBQ in San Marcos is the real deal — smoked brisket, jalapeño sausage, and all the fixings. It's a rite of passage, and move-in weekend is the perfect time to initiate the whole family.

Grins - Grins is an iconic north campus restaurant with a treehouse vibe. With classic fare and a great drinks menu, Grins is a great stop for the whole family.

Crafthouse Kitchen & Tap - For a lively, casual atmosphere with great food and craft beers (for the parents who've earned it after a day of hauling furniture), Crafthouse Kitchen & Tap hits the spot. It's fun, it's flavorful, and it's a great way to end the day on a high note.

Pro tip: After dinner, don't skip dessert. Pop into Rhea's Ice Cream for a scoop of something unexpected, like Big Red or Maple Bacon. San Marcos doesn't do boring.
