Summer in Downtown San Marcos

Downtown really is the heart of San Marcos and there's no better way to get the real feel of San Marcos than by simply walking around the square. Colorful boutiques, charming coffee shops and cafes, murals and artwork hidden around every corner and so much more - there's always something fun to discover Downtown.

Patios, sidewalk seating, courtyards and more – taking your meals (or beverages) outside allows you to change up the atmosphere, soak up some fresh air and support local businesses all at the same time! One of the great things about San Marcos is that we have lots of options for you to choose from.

Colorful Adventures

Downtown San Marcos is certainly a colorful destination and we aren’t just talking about our vibrant natural colors either… San Marcos has a blossoming art scene, and you can find an ever-growing collection of murals, sculptures, galleries and more popping up in even the most unusual places around town. Mini murals, massive murals, mermaids and more – finding the art of SMTX is always a fun time. Next time you stroll around the square we suggest taking a shortcut to look in alleyways and behind buildings to find your new favorite piece. Oh, and you're going to want to make a stop by the San Marcos Art Center to see what cool and quirky pieces our talented local artists are creating! 

Art Events & Live Music

There's always something fun happening in Downtown San Marcos, and our art events are extra fun, if we do say so ourselves! Plan your Summer SMTXperience on a second weekend of the month to explore all the treasures being sold at Art Squared Art Market on the Hays County Courthouse Lawn. Make sure you check out the goodies being sold from local vendors at the San Marcos Farmers Market that takes place every Saturday morning. Get yourself a cold beverage of your choosing and peruse the wares and works from local artists, as well as some working in real time, at Martian Culture. Get some food and something cold to sip on (just no styrofoam or glass) and head over the two blocks from the Downtown Square to Plaza Park for the Summer In The Park Concert Series on Thursday nights. 

The fun doesn’t end when the sun goes down in San Marcos. In fact, we would say, you are only getting started! There’s always something going on in San Marcos and you can bet you’ll find live music every night of the week. Legendary career-launching stages. Small hole-in-the-wall bars.
